Share the Care

“Share the care” may initially sound like a bumper sticker!  Don’t be fooled -- it is a simple and succinct statement describing active participation in the body of Christ, the church.   Providing care is not limited to clergy; it is part of the call and vocation of each and every member. A congregation will “voice its support of those baptized,” and those receiving baptism “declare their intention to participate actively and responsibly in the worship and mission of the church” (BO, W-3.3603).  Caring for one another is part of the promises we make to one another in baptism.

Pat Gleich, associate for National Health Ministries, PCUSA, has written a very informative and practical article about visitation ministry in the July/August Horizon magazine.  She writes:

A friend of mine who focused on pastoral care while in seminary told me that the introductory class in her program was dubbed "Don't Sit on the Bed." While that simplistic title is catchy, visitation ministry --- a formal sounding name for visits made to friends, family or congregation members in hospitals, homes or long‑term care situations -- includes more than knowing not to sit on the bed. Rewarding and pleasant visits require consideration of many issues and sensitivity to the person or people being visited.

Pat provides practical suggestions and guidelines for visiting our fellow parishioners.  This is a great article to duplicate for all church leaders and members alike who want to participate in visitation ministry.  As we gear up for fall, let us not forget to refresh and update our visitation ministry groups.

And, while November may seem like a long time from August, it is not too soon to assemble your congregation’s two or three member leadership team for Care Team Ministry training.  This exciting and practical training event is limited to 50 participants. Please register soon for the Care Team Leadership Training Event, Saturday, November 19, at First Church, Howard County sponsored by the Presbytery’s Committee on Education and Congregational Nurture. Pat Gleich, National PCUSA staff, and Donna Coffman, regional PCUSA Care Ministries staff, will be leading this one-day training event. Registration forms will be sent to congregations September 1 and are on the website.

Godspeed, Terry Martin-Minnich
