Text Box: Several weeks ago I attended the first ever “Presbyterian Communicators’ Network Regional Gathering.” In attendance were 52 folks who are engaged in a wide variety of communications activities at all levels of the church. It’s nice to be in a room full of people who like to create the message, tell the story, promote the event, spread the word, and think about how to do all of the above in ever more captivating and compelling ways.

We shared similar achievements and accomplishments, failures and frustrations. For everyone, the transition from paper to electronics has been an exciting, scary, and inevitable time. In recent years, many presbytery budgets have shrunk, but the smaller staffs have increased their capacity and capability.

I picked up some interesting ideas and facts over the two-day meeting. For example, the PCUSA has recently developed a very attractive and effective evangelism campaign called “Here and Now,” and I would recommend it to you if your congregation’s target audience is 25 to 45-year-olds.

Here’s another interesting tid-bit: Radio listening is on the increase while television watching is on the decrease! So the message is to broadcast the message on your local radio station.

Create a simple logo or design that reflects your church’s identity and use it consistently on all your communications – newsletter, stationery, flyers, website, envelopes. The theme, image, and color will create “TOMA” (Top Of Mind Awareness).

Develop the habit of sending press releases about your church’s mission to the local newspaper. Sooner or later, you’ll see something in print!

And if you think that communications is an activity unworthy of our sacred time, just remember Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Paul. Where would we be without their commitment to communicate?
