Text Box: Conversion is first of all a work of the grace of God who makes our hearts return to God. It is the story of the person from whom Jesus expelled the demon, the person who heard Jesus say, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.” It is the story of Paul when the scales immediately fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. It is the story of Mary near the tomb, speaking to Jesus and then running to tell the others. It is the invitation to the rich man to just become aware that Lazarus is at his gate begging for the crumbs from his table. It is the story of Zaccheus, so touched by Christ that he would give away half of what he owned.
Conversion is our story as we cling to the safe and secure and renege on our promise for fear of being rejected, abandoned, or even left for dead. It is our story as we give in to the temptation to save our lives by abundance, to trust popularity, human understanding, and material possessions more than we trust God.
At the last meeting of Project 6:15, the consultant Ken Priddy took me aside. He wanted to talk about his discovery that virtually none of the 203 mainline denominational churches in the Project have a passion to convert people who have no faith community (nearly 58% of the country) to Christianity. Ken is extremely passionate about new conversions and is perplexed by this discovery.
Getting in touch with our passion about what God has done in our life is one of the keys to church growth. It is that passion that moves us to invite others to church. It is pretty clear that passionate inviters promote church growth.
Audrey Hudson Trapp of Faith Presbyterian Church is an inviter. Whether we communicate by phone, email, or in person, she always invites me to Faith. The invitation varies – to hear the steel drums, to hear Christa preach, to have lunch and lecture, to enjoy the great music in worship. She frequently mentions why she is so passionate about Faith Church: when she really needed a faith community, the people of Faith came through for her in a big way.
What grace has God worked in your life? Has it filled you with a passionate faith? Have you shared it?
