Text Box: H. Richard Neibuhr called us to be transformers of culture – and this requires engaging culture.  During the past month I have found myself doing a new thing – meeting with people in government.

The Ecumenical Leaders prayed with the Governor and will be doing the same with Mayor O’Malley at the end of this month.  I represented the Presbytery at two Press Conferences – one slots and one stem cell research – and testified on stem cell research before committees in the House and the Senate (blessedly the same day).

What did I come away with?

People who swarm the halls of Annapolis are filled with a sense of doing something really important – they are engaged in a cause they believe in to their core.  As a church pastor, I wished that pew sitters had the same passion and sense of mission.

We are extraordinarily well served not only by Beryl Smith but also by Sarah Donnelly who works the issues with her.  These representatives of ours are keenly aware of our church’s position and seek to represent it faithfully.  And they do so with deep concern.

The elected officials who are under significant pressure – to the point of impacting their health – appreciate our prayers.  They want to know how their faith can inform their decisions and most share the desire to do what is right.

I saw that the Roman Catholic voice is well represented with six lobbyists.  Even when it was not their event – they were there – talking with the media and the legislators.  We need to continue to work to make sure that our understanding of the faith is represented along with the voices of other faith traditions.

Blessings,
Peter Nord

Bay NCD asks for prayers:

That those whom God is calling into fellowship with us might hear and respond to that call. We want to stay connected to the vision each of us has received from the Spirit. We are working to cover this large unserved area of Southern Anne Arundel County and all of Calvert County. The task feels heavy after all of these years of meeting and organizing. We ask you and the churches to pray for our strength and stamina and a new infusion of JOY for the process.
