I write the morning after a rather amazing meeting of Presbytery. I often ask – where did you see God in today’s meeting? That question was not asked – but let me share with you some of my answers. I saw God in the words and presence of a Rabbi who was willing to struggle with us to find ways to work together for peace. I saw God in the three people that Committee on Preparation for Ministry brought to the meeting for examination and the really wonderful dialogue between them and the Presbytery about things theological. I saw God in the announcement that more than $1 million had been pledged for new church development. I saw God in the pictures of Dr. Patricia of Guatemala. These are the images I wish to retain of that meeting.
We also tackled a proposal to support civil marriage for same gender couples. Yes, I was disappointed that the Council’s recommendation for studied reflection before the vote was rejected. And yes, I am saddened by the distress this vote is causing for some of our brothers and sisters.
This Presbytery has had a long and consistent history for how it approaches controversial issues. While this approach has permitted this Presbytery to be a strong voice for certain important issues, it has done so at a cost. I believe there is a need for a new way for dealing with such issues that empowers the moderate middle which has been largely silenced by the voices of those on the edges. I invite you to join me in this effort.
Finally, let us focus on what is at the heart of why we are Christians who are the body of Christ: The grace and love of Jesus Christ.
Blessings, Peter Nord
