Care of the Soul

When we say a person has soul, we recognize a certain quality. We know intuitively that soul has genuineness, depth value, relatedness, heart, and personal substance.

Attention to the soul is a never ending process. I recognizes how he was caring for his soul when President Harry S Truman reflecting on the previous days end.

“I was so tired, I could hardly set up, went to bed right away. After playing Margie’s song record and then played the piano – the Minuet in G and Chopin waltzes.”

Truman by David McCullough

It is as if the soul has work to do. If ignored, we hear complaints, such as:

emptiness, meaninglessness, vague depression, disillusionment about marriage, family, relationships, a loss of values, yearning for personal fulfillment,  and a hunger for spirituality.

Having been touched by God's desire, I want to make that desire for God the determining factor for all my choices. Since 1995, I have been in group and individual spiritual direction. Last year both slipped away and I am experiencing some of these complaints.

What works for you? Sports, music, walks in the woods, Bible study, striving for justice, theological reflection, prayer are a few of the possibilities. If Group Spiritual Direction is what works for you, I recommend the Oasis Ministries offerings in the Baltimore area. www.oasismin.org.

I encourage you to care for your soul. Be intentional, be regular, be brave.

Bill
