On the Path
Towards Peace And
so we come to the end of another hot, humid summer in Baltimore. Next week,
we send our children back to school, definitively knowing their whereabouts
for at least a few hours each day. Over-burdened vans travel up and down
Interstate 95 sporting various college logos on their bumpers, delivering
quasi-adults to their “other” lives. The state fair begins this
weekend. The thermometer creeps blessedly below the 90 degree mark. Vacation
Bible School has ended, Rally Day is planned and ready to launch. The church
begins to awaken from its summer respite once again. Yet
the world has not been quiet this summer. Lebanon plays host to a simmering
time bomb, Iraq is in turmoil and heading toward civil war, Afghanistan still
claims the lives of innocent people, New Orleans faces the one-year
anniversary of Katrina with destruction and devastation remaining painfully
evident. Peace.
Paix. Friede. Shalom. Pace. Amani. Pokoj. Paz. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be
called children of God” Matthew
5:9 “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from
on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in
the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” Luke
1:78-79 Join
together, friends, in bearing witness to the peace that our God calls upon us
to wage in the world. Stand up on September 11 and join Baltimore’s
Peace Path (flyer,
poster
and invitational
letter). Preach the words of peace from every pulpit, from every
classroom, from every newsletter. It is what we are called to do. Yes,
it is the end of a long, hot summer. Change is in the air. God is calling us
to hear the crying of God’s people. How will you answer? May
God’s peace be with you always- Deb
