Worship on Christmas Sunday

Dear Colleagues in Ministry,

A month ago I found myself in Charleston, attending a meeting of Executives.  On Friday a colleague of mine and I walked down King Street and stepped into a very old Episcopal Church.  Once inside, we saw the priest beginning the noon service.  The only other person was one worshipper, wearing a police uniform.

This week I read of some mega churches that had canceled Christmas Sunday services.  There were all sorts of critical comments about lite Christianity.  Of course, we know better.  Christmas on a Sunday never seems to be much of a “gift.”

One of the “Great Ends of the Church” is “the maintenance of divine worship.”  To be honest, I find something both ‘romantic’ and compelling in the priest in Charleston, conducting divine worship with the one who had come.  We Protestants tend to think that what matters is how many have come.  And yet if God is the audience in this drama, we must admit that the number in the cast is unimportant.

Whether Christmas arrives on Sunday or snow hits on Saturday night, it is pretty much the same for me – we have an obligation to offer praises to God on Sunday.  And it matters not if one or a hundred or a thousand join us in this faithful worship of God who loves us enough to live among us.

No doubt you have already made plans for worship on Christmas Sunday.  I encourage you to approach this day with as much energy, intelligence, imagination, and love as you do every Sunday.  And in the process it may well become one of the most treasured services in your ministry.

Blessings,

Peter Nord
