Church Growth

How does God want to be expressed in this church

in this community at this time?

What are the three issues you need to address

in the next year to realize this expression?

In leadership retreats around the Presbytery of Baltimore, I have asked these questions. “God wants our church to grow” is a common answer. I am reading a brochure for a church growth event in Wilmington, DE that will take place on March 4 called “Reach Out! Growing Your Congregation” (View brochure).

Topics to be covered are:

  • The importance of welcoming new residents to your community
  • The gift of connecting meaningfully with local social-services agencies
  • The wisdom of significant community visibility and involvement
  • The prospect of planning community-focused events
  • The power of person-to-person invitational evangelism

In 1967 the Presbyterian Church (USA) decided to focus on peace and justice and not start any more new churches. That move away from church growth has put us in a decline for years. As the Church Enhancement Committee works with churches to grow, we are very aware of the difficulties that lie ahead of congregations that decide to grow.

Some other helpful events for your consideration:

  • "Equipping Essentials: Are You Modeling Real Teamwork Yet?" on January 21, 2006 (Read more)
  • The Magnetic Church Conference: May 19-20, 2006 at Woods PC. (View brochure). Ministry information at: www.magnetic-church.com

I will be encouraging you this year to attend and send your leaders to events like this. We can be a growing denomination again. God will build the church.
