Rev. Dr. Donald W. Bracken Dies

Longtime Pastor of Frederick Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Dr. Donald Bracken, 76, Pastor Emeritus of Frederick Presbyterian Church, died after a long illness Sunday afternoon at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, MD.  A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held 11am Wednesday at Frederick Presbyterian Church; and, internment will follow Thursday in Johnstown, Pa.

Rev. Bracken spent the most pivotal years of his ministry – from 1965 to 1985 – serving as pastor of Frederick Presbyterian Church and its surrounding community. Under his guidance, the church showed continuing interest in the social concerns of the "wider parish" – opening its building to make room for the city’s first community daycare center, social welfare offices and literacy council meetings.  As a champion of social causes, Rev. Bracken was instrumental in organizing chaplain programs at the local jail, hospital, Frederick Rescue Mission and the newly-organized Senior Citizens Fellowship Center.  He helped sponsor the first meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous in Frederick, which also were held at the church.

Rev. Bracken answered the call to ministry as a youth in his native Johnstown, Pa. where he was licensed as a Brethren minister in high school.  However, while attending seminary, the novice theologian embraced the polity of Presbyterianism and joined its ministry.  After receiving a Master’s Degree in Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, he was ordained in 1956 and began his ministry as an associate pastor at Govans Presbyterian Church in Baltimore.  Several years later he accepted the call to pastor the Frederick congregation.

After 20 years of service to the Presbytery of Baltimore, Rev. Bracken accepted a call to minister in Chambersburg, PA – only to return to the Frederick Area following his retirement in 1996. Although Rev. Bracken was bed-ridden with Parkinson’s Disease, he remained an enthusiastic fan of local sports teams and enjoyed cheering them on as he and his wife, Peggy, watched the games on television.  During quieter moments, the couple enjoyed listening to classical music.

In addition to his wife of 48 years, Rev. Bracken is survived by a daughter, the Rev. Dr. Kimberly Long of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, David Bracken of Durham, NC and four grandchildren.
