Keeping In Step with the Exec. Presbyter

Dear Colleagues,

Sometimes you will get a message on my phone that indicates that I will not be in the office for a few days.  ‘So what is he doing?’ you may say.  I thought it would be good to let you know of some of my work at our church’s national level.

This past year I served on a task force (it met once) to develop a handbook for moderators and clerks about discernment in decision making.  This handbook, which is available at General Assembly (GA), will be used by two assembly committees.

I, along with several other executives, also have had significant dialogue with Linda Valentine, Karen Schmidt and other GA staff regarding the new “System of Giving” that is being recommended to GA.  This system calls for a “Season of Interpretation” similar to last year’s Mission Challenge ’07.  This is significant, particularly, as it applies to the direct solicitation of church members by GA – which is our bone of contention.  We are working to extend GA’s methodology to sessions and presbyteries so that all might benefit from their ideas.

Twice a year, I attend the Urban Presbytery Network meeting, which gathers executives from fifteen urban centers for a discussion about best practices.  In April, this group meets in Charlotte to discuss the ministry of African American churches.  I also work on another task force that designs curriculum for executive presbyters; and, I serve as a member of that group’s training faculty.  The new design is focusing on “executive formation” and will emphasize – as never before – the executive as spiritual leader.

Most recently, I have returned from an executive training event during which I had the opportunity to speak with several GA staff in leadership roles.  There seems to be a real excitement about working relationships among the staff.  It is clear that these leaders, more than previous generations, have an intense desire to see the church grow through a sharing of the good news that we receive through Jesus Christ.

Finally, I would report that Stated Clerk Cliff Kirkpatrick looked good last week – although it was a different story a month ago.  He journeyed to Kenya to mediate talks among Presbyterians who are at odds with each other over the country’s recent elections.  At one point, he and several others were held at machine gunpoint for hours in the sun.  Eventually he was freed and, of course, he was relieved to have suffered little more than severe sun burn on his face and head.  I am grateful for his life-risking, peacemaking efforts on the church’s behalf.

Blessings,

Peter Nord

Peter is currently in Virginia meeting with executive presbyters of the Mid-Atlantic Synod.
