A Time of Wonderment

In accordance with God’s promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. – II Peter 3:13

In these days of hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes – we wonder.  In these days of tax cuts for the rich and scaled back programs for the poor – we wonder.  In these days of debates over marriage, abortion, and war – we wonder.  The texts for these first weeks in Advent tell us to speak tenderly to Jerusalem, to prepare a road in the wilderness, to shout “Here is the Lord.”  And where is the Lord in all this mess that nature and humans hath wrought?  In Second Peter we are told that the Lord is not slow in coming – rather the Lord is patient – so that none will perish.

So as we move from Thanksgiving, through “Black Friday” (is there a Hallmark card for this too?), into Advent – this period of waiting – waiting for the birth of the Christ child, waiting for the return of the Christ, waiting of the new heavens and new earth, waiting for righteousness finally to be at home – what are we to do?

Let me suggest that we go about living – in peace – seeking to be “right” with God – living holy lives (in all its manifestations) – and trusting that the Lord is, in fact, well along on the highways we have constructed through the wilderness.  And that the Lord has already come to where we stand along that road, and that we are not only invited to join – the parade, the march, the contemplative walk – we are, in fact already amongst the great company of saints making our way towards the new heavens and the new earth where we shall finally and forever be held in swaddling clothes – at one with God our Creator.

Blessings to you along the way,

Peter
