How Will We Further The Peace,

Unity And Purity Of The Church?

Dear Friends,

“Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?”  That is one of the constitutional questions we put before each ordinand, and it is the key question that is before us all as we seek to discern what it means for us to continue as the Presbyterian Church USA. Indeed, in light of the General Assembly Task Force’s report, the question for us may now be: “How will WE further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?”

On August 25th the Task Force report was released.  On October 4th we gathered at Govans Presbyterian to hear from two members of the GA Task Force.  On November 9th and 10th we will have a Presbytery of Baltimore Pastors retreat where we will seek not only to learn about the report, digest it, and discuss it, but we will also attempt to live into the question: “How will WE (as Ministers of Word and Sacrament serving congregations) further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?”

I am committed to this retreat.  Why am I committed to it?  Because I have watched so many of us stand in those lines—you know the lines I’m talking about—the ones we form at Presbytery meetings where we alternate between pro and con on the issue du jour that almost always somehow leads back to sexuality and ordination.  I am not advocating our giving up or giving away positions with which we are deeply committed.  However, I do believe it is time for us to discover how all of us can confess our faith together.

I pray that you will join me on the retreat at Bon Secours on November 9th and 10th.  I am trusting that our time together will be a time of good theological reflection as we attempt to live into the question: “How will WE further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?”
