A Conversation about the Church of the Future

On behalf of the Stewardship and Mission Interpretation Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated in the Church of the Future Workshop which was held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church. The speaker, Michael Durall, Principal of CommonWealth Consulting Group, encouraged and inspired those gathered to work toward empowering the greatest number of people possible to lead lives of dedication, sacrifice and commitment by:

  • creating communities of compassion
  • empowering people in the pews
  • helping others find the spark of the divine
  • saying yes to new ideas

Michael explored what he called, “the integrity of membership”, stating that we have made church “too easy”. We were left to question, “What does it mean to be a member?” He challenged us to step out on faith, reminding us that at times we ask the wrong question; it’s not, “Can we afford to do this or that?” or “Does the salary reflect the value of ministry or is the salary a budgetary decision?”; but, more importantly, we should ask, “Is it the right thing to do?”

We concluded that the Church of the Future is about servant leadership with a simple mission, “To be a place where people are cared for and will be called upon to care for others”.

A group of us has decided to continue this conversation through a Yahoo group. We invite you to join with us on this path at:

We are happy to announce that a similar half-day workshop will be held on January 27, 2006 location TBD. This low cost workshop will be hosted by Fred Milligan, Associate for Training at the General Assembly.

Yours in Christ,

Rita Walters
