What Type of New Church Plant?

Successful new church plants depend on a number of factors. One factor is the type of plant. When you understand the type of new church plant, you can better understand your role in making it a success. There are five basic types:

The most effective church plant is Mother/Daughter. That is one church starting another. Much of the hard work of deciding on the DNA of the new congregation is a given in this model. The plant is given people and resources from the Mother Church. Twenty one families are needed to begin this model. First and Franklin has started 11 congregations. Is your church ready to start a new church?

The Franchise Plant puts up the Brand Name (PCUSA). That is effective in adult communities. Baltimore used this approach very effectively in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Pop-up a church and they will come.

The Lay Initiative Plant happens when a group of folks want a Presbyterian Church in their area. When they have gathered 40 people committed to the effort the denomination is approached to help develop a strategy for chartering. Bay New Church is on this track. (read more)

The Parachute Drop Plant is the most difficult. The denomination puts a church planter in a growing area and says, “go start a church.” If the person is skilled and relates well to the mission field the plant may have a chance. The success rate is only between 10 – 12%. St. Andrews in Mt. Airy is a parachute drop.

The best Immigrant Plants are a type of Parachute Drop. They focus on a particular immigrant population. The planter does a tent ministry while at the same time beginning a new church.

Each of these basic five types has multiple variations. When we start a new church we are very much planting and expecting God to provide the fruit. It is a wonderful experience to witness. St. Andrews in Mt Airy, New Imani in Randallstown, Harford County GenX, and Bay New Church Development in Southern Arundel and Calvert Counties have been inspiring for me to see.
