In Search of the Promised Land

For as long as I can remember, the Presbyterian Church has been in search of the Promised Land.  For most of this time, we have been wandering about in the wilderness, grumbling about the current state of affairs, and pining for a past that never really existed.

Throughout the Hebrews’ sojourn in the wilderness, Moses didn’t have so much a vision for the Land as he had a trust that God was leading him and his band of God’s people.  As we search for the Promised Land, neither General Assembly nor I know anything more than Moses.

But we have been given as a gift – a sketch, a suggestion – for what this Land might look like.  It comes in the form of the Final Report of the Task Force on the Peace, Unity, and Purity of the Church.

Having read the report, my hope is renewed.  I suppose this hope springs from the fact that most of my fellow wanderers are grumbling and no one seems to be celebrating – or ready to contribute their jewelry to the building of the latest version of the Golden Calf.

Yet by returning to our historic roots, the Task Force has shown us a way over the mountains that have been standing in our way.  This report – and what we do with it – needs to be taken seriously by all who love our church.  We are facing one of those rare Kairos moments.

Therefore, each and every one of us should make tomorrow’s Special Meeting of Presbytery a priority.  From 4 – 6 PM on October 4 at Govans Presbyterian Church we will hear from two members of the Task Force.

Parish clergy will be given first priority in attending an overnight retreat, November 9-10 at Bon Secours.  There we can dialogue and plan how to introduce it to our congregations.  Please take advantage of this most important occasion.  You may register with Alice McGee at the Presbytery.

Blessings,

Peter Nord
