And now a word from the Synod . . .

The Synod of Mid-Atlantic met this past week in Wilmington.  Bill Galvin ably led the Shared Ministries Standing Committee and Doris Cowan served on the Finance Committee.

The Synod Administrative Review Commission (ARC) gave its report which was approved without substantive change.  This report includes nine “recommendations.”  These will be considered by the Presbytery Committee that met with the ARC and they will issue a set of recommendations to the Presbytery as to how we shall answer their concerns. The full report of the ARC and the Committee’s recommendations will be available to the Presbytery prior to our November meeting.  We hope this will put to rest this long ordeal.

The other undercurrent at Synod was a clear indication that support for the Synod is at its lowest levels ever.  Requests for additional staff and an increase in per capita were rejected.  A consultation will be held in 2006 – consisting of the Synod Council, the Executive Presbyters, and an elected person from each Presbytery who will consider the Synod’s future.  Synod mission has been reduced to a minimal level – with the largest support being given to Abingdon Presbytery and Church Development.  A half dozen other programs of the Synod are receiving funds that range from $2,000 to $16,000 – many of which are supported by Synod Endowments.

Congregational Care Teams

Please plan to attend the Care Team Ministry Leadership Training, People Who Need Care Bridging With People Who Want to Care.”  The event will take place Saturday, November 19, 2005 9am – 4pm at First PC of Howard County. (read more)

Patricia K. Gleich, EdS., Associate for National Health Ministries, will be the presenter of the training session.  She states, “Congregational Care Teams are an ideal way to organize Care ministries to fit the needs of the congregation.  Once the basic structure is in place and the people are trained, a team can receive additional training and information to meet the particular situation they have been asked to address.  As our congregations age, as communities cope with trauma on small and large scales, care teams are the ideal way to show the compassionate concern that reflects our deep faith.”
