    PEACE AND JUSTICE

  12. REPORTS: In January the Presbytery joined the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative Education Fund and adopted the resolution "Health Care for All." We committed to educating our member churches about "Health Care for All." To that end, the Peace and Justice Committee will be assisting the Maryland Health Care Initiative to contact Sessions, inform them about the Initiative, and urge them to join. These efforts will continue throughout the rest of the year.
  13.

    EDUCATION AND CONGREGATIONAL NURTURE

  14. REPORTS that six churches responded to an invitation from the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic to nominate an older adult for a synod award. An abstract of each nomination follows. All six nominees are Outstanding Older Adults in the Presbytery of Baltimore.
  15. NICK BARRY (Christ Our Anchor): Nick was 73 when he and his wife Jean moved to Annapolis from New Jersey. They sought a theologically open, mission-minded church where their time, talent, and treasure might really be needed, and they found a perfect niche in Christ Our Anchor. A previously ordained elder, Nick has served on Session, taught Sunday School, sung in the choir, chaired a capital campaign, and continues to participate in many fellowship and interest groups. At 80+ years, Nick is one of the most vocal supporters (among the "traditionalists") of his church’s new contemporary worship service; he encourages those less open to new worship styles to consider the mission outreach that the service provides. Nick has also been quite active at the Presbytery level having served on the Stewardship and Mission Interpretation Committee and the Big Event Committee. As if his life weren’t busy enough, Nick finds time every month to copy, collate, fold, and mail his church’s monthly newsletter. A tireless, gentle-spirited, always willing volunteer, Nick Barry is in a league of his own.

VIRGINIA BRANTLEY * (Granite): Virginia joined Granite soon after World War II when she was a young mother of four boys. During the 50+ years since then, she has served multiple terms as an Elder and Deacon as well as being a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Youth Ministry Leader, and member of the Women’s Association. Her ability to nurture others has found many forms of expression within the church family – for example, serving luncheons for bereaved families following funerals; visiting or phoning homebound members; making special "guardian angels" for the sick; and blessing the entire congregation with "visual acts of worship" such as floral arrangements and bountiful Thanksgiving cornucopias in the Chancel. Virginia’s interest and skill in arts and crafts are evident in the favors she provides for congregational dinners, the projects she plans for the Presbytery’s annual Older Adult Experience at Chesapeake Center, and most notably in the Christmas Craft Exhibit in which community artists participated for over 15 years. The endeavor not only yielded impressive revenues, but also became an occasion for outreach to the community. At 75, Virginia continues to tend the flock of the Lord.

BURT CORDRY (Chestnut Grove): For over 40 years, Burt has distinguished himself as a kind, compassionate, and committed friend who shares his great faith by example. Currently, as a very active member of the "more mature" Chestnuts, he telephones or visits the sick, provides rides to church functions, does household repairs, and most importantly always gives time to listen and offer encouragement. One member of the church, a recent widow, maintains that without Burt’s support, she could not have endured the sorrow of her husband’s death. During Bible Study classes, he demonstrates a deep understanding of scripture and biblical principles. Since 1958 Burt has participated in the church’s bell and vocal choirs, has been an elder and a deacon numerous times, and has mentored many teenage confirmands. For Chestnut Grove’s 150th anniversary, he spent hours gathering and compiling historical information into a commemorative book. Those who know this wonderful man agree that he exemplifies the principles of a faithful life devoted to the service of others.

ANN KLINGAMAN (Catonsville): Ann has been a member at Catonsville since 1937, and she has served in many capacities over the years including Deacon, Trustee, and as head of the Worship Committee for the Board of the Presbyterian Home in Towson. However, her most significant impact has been as teacher of the senior high Sunday School class. She took over this class in 1983, the year she retired after teaching biology in public school for 31 years. Ann is an exceptionally gifted teacher, bringing to her students a wealth of personal experience enriched by her extensive reading. From the beginning, Ann developed her own challenging curriculum which she presents each week with great energy and enthusiasm. Her classroom feels warm and nurturing, and each student feels personally recognized and cared for. Through her loving relationship with them they learn to appreciate the love of God. Her strong faith is very evident to her students as she models the Christian way of life through service, caring, and love.

BLANCHE McCORMICK (Harundale):Blanche is 89 and has been an integral and charming part of Harundale for so long that it is hard to imagine her not being here! She has served as Elder, Deacon, and Trustee – all after her 50th birthday. In Presbyterian Women, she has worked on the Finance and Nominating Committees, and she has participated in Circle meetings, Bible Study, Fellowship, Outreach, and Christian witnessing. Over the years her volunteer activities have included answering the church telephones during staff meetings; arranging for Chancel flowers; sending cards; coordinating Meals On Wheels; providing food for receptions and other events; and helping with Operation Hotline. Blanche continues to be a source of inspiration to all who serve with her. She witnesses to the truth in Matthew 5:16 – "Let your light so shine before men and women that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

RUTH PIERSON (Babcock): Most people who join Babcock credit Ruth with making them feel at home the first time they stepped through the door. It is a rare Sunday morning that she is not found in the narthex exercising a ministry of hospitality. And throughout the week she writes letters, makes phone calls, and visits people; she senses who is lonely and needing the helping touch of Jesus. Ruth can laugh and cry with people, and always she prays with people. Even with her own health problems, Ruth is able to lose herself in order to minister to others. She is a great counselor, Bible teacher, and friend. She would be the last person to tell you that she is an outstanding woman of faith, but in this case, Ruth’s friends know better. She is a most faithful and loving disciple of Jesus Christ.

*Virginia Brantley was Baltimore Presbytery’s nominee for the Synod’s Outstanding Older Adult Award.
